About The Reading Alliance Elders Program

TRA Elders' Program is a part-time paid program that trains retired men to become early literacy tutor for students in early education, resulting in better readers by the end of third grade. Not only is the program proven to improve students’ reading skills, but it also builds critical social and emotional skills they need for successful learning now — and later in life. Currently, the Elders Program operates in Maricopa County.

HELPING KIDS READ AT GRADE LEVEL BY 3RD GRADE

Helping a child learn to read is an amazing feeling. TRA's Elder Program makes it easy to start giving back, with training and ongoing support when you’re in the classroom.

Why is this work important

Did you know that an African American child’s likelihood of going to prison is increases drastically it he/she doesn't read on grade level by the third grade?

In addition, children who can't read at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely not to graduate from high school, putting them on a path to poverty and increase the chances of them going to prison even more. But Elders', like you, are helping turn that statistic around.

Not only are the students benefiting from the program, but our Elders' report a feeling of gratitude, satisfaction and purpose while contributing to their community.

How can you get involved?

The Elders' Program is a unique opportunity for retired adults. Not only will you stay active while learning new skills, but you’ll also know you’re making a meaningful difference in children’s lives and you community. To top it off, training and ongoing support are provided.

We’re actively seeking Elders'! Sign up to be apart of TRA's Elders' Program
