The Reading Alliance's Luminary Leader Apprenticeship and Elders Program is dedicated to equitable education, striving for economic and social mobility for our students and Leader's. A diverse education workforce is key for all students, especially students of color. There is a growing racial disparity in our primary and secondary education system, with over 90% of teachers being non-African American or Latino and more than half of the students being of color.
LLAP was created to diversify the education pipeline and address issues that impact low literacy rates within minority communities by offering literacy tutoring services to children throughout Maricopa County. Our program also offers resources for boys and young men of color (BYMOC), such as careers, training, academic resources, motivation, skill-building, mentoring and a chance to connect with fellow cohort members and experienced educators.
Our tutors also known as Leaders are housed within the Maricopa County school district classrooms year round. Recipients of our program are children ages three to seven years old and young men of color over the age of eighteen.
No Experience Necessary
Previous education experience is not necessary to qualify for our apprenticeship program. As an apprenticeship program, we expect most trainees to have little to no experience. Our program is designed to introduce leaders to the education field. Utilizing training, classroom, and personal & professional experiences, we aim to give our leaders the tools to discover their interests and prepare them for a career in education.

THE SELECTION PROCESS
Application requirements must be satisfied prior to acceptance into the program
