We aim to uplift male educators that are committed to education and the advancement of their community.

The Reading Alliance's Luminary Leader Apprenticeship (LLAP) and Elders Program is dedicated to education, striving for economic and social mobility for our students and our Leader's. An education workforce that represents many cultural backgrounds and all walks of life is key for all students. There is a growing literacy disparity in our primary and secondary education system, with over 89% of teachers being non-male. TRA is embedding men that culturally represent the students we serve to assist in closing the literacy gap.

We believe that by employing highly-trained male Literacy Instructional Assistance (LIA) who are deeply grounded in the science of reading, we foster a positive and impactful learning environment for students. This approach not only strengthens the quality of literacy interventions but also promotes a deeper understanding of the critical role literacy plays in a child's educational journey. By prioritizing evidence-based practices, we empower students to build strong reading foundations, ensuring long-term academic success and growth.

LLAP was created to broaden access to educational opportunities and address the challenges contributing to low literacy rates in underserved communities by providing literacy instructional assistance to children across Maricopa County. Our program also offers support to young men that culturally represent students and all walks of life through resources that include career development, training, academic assistance, motivation, skill-building, mentorship, and opportunities to connect with peers and experienced educators.

Our LIA's also known as Leaders, are serving within Maricopa County school district classrooms year round. Recipients of our program are children ages three to seven years old and young men over the age of eighteen.

"The program is life changing! Coming from an environment where it seems as if I don't have options, Luminary Leader has open the my eye and gave me a career path in education."

- Kterrius Johnson, Luminary Leader 2022

No Experience Necessary

Previous education experience is not necessary to qualify for our apprenticeship program. As an apprenticeship program, we expect most trainees to have little to no experience. Our program is designed to introduce young men to the education field. Utilizing training, classroom, and personal & professional experiences, we aim to give our leaders the tools to discover their interests and prepare them for a career in education.
