Strengthening Early Literacy in Your Classrooms

The Reading Alliance partners with schools to accelerate early literacy through structured instruction, classroom support, and programs grounded in the Science of Reading.

Why Early Literacy Support Matters

Many students enter elementary school without the foundational skills needed for reading success. Teachers are often asked to close significant literacy gaps while managing full classrooms and competing instructional demands.

Without targeted support, it becomes difficult to provide the additional instruction and practice that struggling readers need.

Early literacy intervention is one of the most effective ways schools can improve long-term academic outcomes.

What a TRA Literacy Instructional Assistant Does

LIAs support teachers by:

• leading small-group literacy practice
• reinforcing phonemic awareness and phonics instruction
• helping students practice decoding skills
• providing additional repetition and feedback

This allows teachers to maintain instructional pacing while struggling readers receive targeted support.

Case Study 1

Strengthening Foundational Literacy Skills in Early Elementary

A Title I elementary school serving a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students partnered with The Reading Alliance to strengthen foundational literacy skills in the early grades. Many students entered kindergarten with limited exposure to phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge, making it difficult for teachers to keep students on track with grade-level reading expectations.

TRA Intervention
The Reading Alliance implemented its structured literacy approach through the ABCs to Reading® program, which emphasizes explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program was supported by trained Literacy Instructional Assistants (LIAs) who worked directly in classrooms to reinforce skills through small-group instruction and guided practice.

Results
By the end of the school year:

• 95% of students demonstrated alphabet knowledge mastery
• 74% of students reached phonological awareness benchmarks
• 75% of students were prepared to enter first grade with foundational reading skills

Takeaway
Providing structured literacy instruction combined with classroom support allowed teachers to deliver more targeted instruction and helped students develop the foundational skills needed to begin reading.
